LED Neon strip: which one to choose?

LED Neon strip: which one to choose?

Led lights

The neon LED strip is often considered as a type of industrial LED lighting that is only found in offices, warehouses, and factories. It is also inviting itself in housing and shops. As it comes in many references, you may be faced with a dilemma during its purchase. In this guide, we show you how to choose your neon LED strips.

The big families of LED strips

You will inevitably discover several types of neon LED strips when your prospect on the market to buy your product. Their size can indeed be 60, 90, 120 or 150 centimeters. The installation mode of the neon LED strip is also variable since it can be directly fixed to the wall or ceiling or suspended using cables. The light intensity also differs from one reference to the other, as well as the shape and color temperature of illumination. Finally, there are watertight strips that have an IP 65 protection rating and others strictly reserved for indoor use in a non-humid area. The choice of this equipment generally depends on the following factors: the type of strip, the expected light intensity, the power, the type of laying or the place where it will be placed.

Criterion n ° 1: for which type of LED neon strip tilt?

There are two main types of neon strips: those whose support and lamp form a single block and the strip for LED tube T8 or T5, empty, in which you must integrate a neon LED tube. Choose the latter if you do not want to replace the entire lamp when it no longer works. You just need to change the neon LED. For the installation of your neon LED, we recommend you to consult our useful guide on the connection of a neon LED.

 Criterion 2: Light intensity

The following two values should be considered in order to know if a LED neon strip matches your expectations: lumens and lux. The lumens express the brightness of the slider. The higher this value is, the more it will emit a powerful light output. Lux, on the other hand, is the amount of light useful for illuminating a surface. One lux corresponds to one lumen per square meter: 1 lux = 1 lm / m². The French legislative framework defines the minimum amount of lux required to illuminate each type of space or activity (manual work, warehouse, sanitary, etc.). We offer some examples:

The ideal brightness for a work plan

A worktop (kitchen or laboratory) with a surface of 1 m² must be illuminated by a light of 500 lux to allow you to work comfortably. You must, therefore, opt for a LED strip with a luminous intensity of 500 lumens to illuminate it effectively. Choose a model with a luminous flux of 1,000 lumens if the space to be lit is 2 m², and so on.

The ideal intensity of the illuminated LED light strip 12m²

A 60cm LED strip with a luminous intensity of 1,800 lumens in a room of 12 m² will provide lighting of 150 lux. A LED strip 150cm of 3600 lm, it will offer lighting of 300 lux. For comparison, a 100-watt incandescent bulb provides 1,000 lumens of light so it will flood the same room with the illumination of only 83 lux.

Criterion 3: Power

The electrical power of a LED neon strip (and any other lamp) is expressed in watts. It reflects its power consumption when it is turned on. This power is also related to brightness since a LED strip consuming 48 watts will provide a luminous flux of the order of 4,800 lumens, while a neon LED strip with a power of 24 watts will produce a brightness of 2,400. lumens.

Criterion 4: the type of laying of the slider

A neon LED strip can be fixed directly to your ceiling or suspended. The hanging model is ideal if you want to create original bright figures on the ceiling. It is also suitable if the ceiling is high and you want the light to cover your space well. Above a kitchen worktop, the hanging LED lights are the most beautiful effect. In this specific installation, do not hesitate to consult our installation guide for the 24 and 48 Watts suspended strips.

Criterion 5: the place to illuminate with the LED neon strip

The neon LED light is convenient for both indoor and outdoor use. It offers a fairly high light intensity of at least 1800 lumens. It's perfect for rooms that need powerful lighting so you can work or drive comfortably and safely. Before you decide, however, it is always important to know the surface to be illuminated. For example, you can lean for 120 cm or 150 cm strips to illuminate a large area such as an underground car park or a supermarket because their coverage is wide. The strips LED 90cm -60cm or they will be perfect to bring light in a hallway or kitchen. The LED neon strip is usually not suitable for creating a mood light or intimate. You can still play on its lighting color to create a friendly atmosphere in your spaces. What are the places in which you can place a LED strip?
